Introduction

When students log into WebCT, they will enter the MyWebCT page. To access their course, students click on the course hyperlink to go to the WebCT course homepage.

Homepage features and appearances can vary from course to course depending on how instructors choose to design and organize their courses. The following information covers standard navigation in a WebCT course.

Navigating through WebCT

Within WebCT, students can navigate to other parts of the course easily. WebCT contains the following features to facilitate navigation: Breadcrumb Navigation, left-hand Navigation Bar, Menu Bar, and Course Content Action Menu.

Breadcrumb Navigation - leaves a trail of places students have visited in their WebCT course. Students can click on any of the terms to return to the pages.

Left-hand Navigation Bar - displays links to locations and tools in the course. The professor chooses what links appear on the navigation bar. The navigation bar remains on each page that students visit in the course. Students can hide the navigation bar by clicking on Hide Navigation, Expand Content, which will expand the content of the page on the screen, and students can then reveal the navigation bar by clicking on Show Navigation.

Menu Bar - contains the following features:

Course Content Action Menu - allows students to navigate through Course Content pages, or Course Modules. The Action Menu contains the following features:

Setting Screen Size

Sometimes students are not able to preview the full content of a page within their WebCT course. As mentioned above, students can choose to click on the Hide Navigation option to expand the content of the page. Another option is to reset the monitor's screen size.

  1. To reset the screen size, minimize or close all open windows/programs.
  2. Right click the mouse on the Windows desktop and choose Properties. Example:

  3. Click on the the Settings tab. Example:

  4. In the section named Screen Area, select a higher resolution for your screen.

Noting Different WebCT Icons

Icons are images that usually represent a course tool or link. Some professors utilize the standard WebCT icons that come preloaded in the course. Other professors choose to create and upload their own icons to personalize the appearance of their course. WebCT allows professors to include a text link of the icon in addition to the icon image, but professors can opt not to show the text link. Likewise, professors can also choose to display only the text link and not include an icon image.

The following are examples of different ways professors can display a link to the Course Content tool:
